HADRIAN’S HISTORIC RETURN

The architect of Hadrian’s Wall has returned to his masterpiece – albeit almost 2000 years after the event!

A bronze bust of the Emperor Hadrian, on loan from the British Museum, has been installed at Wallsend for summer display entitled “Hadrian: Empire an Conflict. The bust, recovered from the silt of the Thames in 1834 where it had lain for millennia, is priceless.

His work, whilst not the farthest northern outpost of Rome – that honour falls to the Antonine Wall, across the central belt of Scotland – is certainly the best preserved.
